60 Year Ago Today-February 20, 1954 -- #14 Duke 67-North Carolina 63

As North Carolina gets ready to host Duke, THOR looks back to 60 years ago today as the Tar Heels hosted the nationally ranked #14 Blue Devils in Chapel Hill for the first time as members of the newly formed Atlantic Coast Conference. From the description below and the minimal box score, we can see that this was a heavily contested match-up. 55 total fouls called and 89 free throws attempted. Just as it has been at times this year for the Tar Heels, the difference in the game was free throw shooting.

Hopefully, we can come across a more detailed story, but for tonight, we have this AP report published in the Spartanburg Herald-Journal.

Duke Rallies To Top NC, 67-63

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. Feb 20 (AP)-Duke came from behind tonight to defeat archrival North Carolina, 67-63, in an Atlantic Coast Conference basketball battle which was won at the foul line. Both teams scored 36 points from the floor.

Although outscored 20-14 in the first period, the determined Tar Heels were tied with the conference leaders, 38-38, at halftime and at the end of of the third quarter led, 51-48.

But in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter North Carolina failed to convert a field goal and never recovered from that lull.

A near capacity crowd of 5,000 saw North Carolina’s Jerry Vayda lead the scoring parade with 21 points. Duke’s Joe Belmont scored 20.

Duke tied the score 54-54, with 5:45 remaining in the game and 45 seconds later Belmont’s long set shot from the side put the Blue Devils ahead for good, 56-54.

Late in the third period North Carolina center Paul Likins, whose rebounding was a feature of the game, and any hopes the Tar Heels had of pulling an upset just about disappeared.
